Someone called Andy replied with his email addy. I don't see what the point is in being a U.K supplier if the service is just as mediocre. The Warco VMC fitted the bill and I went to the showroom to make my final decision. I also ordered a 3-axis DRO kit (which I had to fit) and an X-axis power feed. You could buy a lifetime supply of end mills for that! As I mentioned last year I decided to buy a Super Lux milling machine with a 3 axis DRO fitted. That's when things started to go wrong. The day before the scheduled delivery I got a call saying they had to reschedule the delivery. OK, but when it was due to be delivered, I moved a load of equipment out of the workshop into the garden in anticipation of the delivery, only to wait in all day and no delivery, not even a call from Chester. I rang the next day and got a feeble excuse and an apology but we agreed another delivery date. The machine arrived but some items missing. Called again and they sent some of the missing items.

The last items missing were the Z axis DRO cover and the Z axis gib locking screw, that had to be removed to fit the DRO scale. Rang again and was told they would be posted to me!!! After a week I called again to say they had not arrived and received another apology and another feeble excuse. Now months later nothing. For the sake of a simple locking screw and bracket they have lost a loyal customer. There customer service is not good but I have to admit the machines are good value for money. Theres little twixt the two machines themselves, maybe the Warco's being finished a tad better, but thats speculative. If it had been badged the Warco I would still have bought it. I have said it before, quite contraversionally in that I could not live with their green colour scheme. I have said it before, quite controversially in that I could not live with their green colour scheme. It is a workshop after all and not a kitchen. Same for a commercial router that the firm supplied in cream. Told them I only wanted it if it WASN'T in cream, they offered blue so i took it but would have taken any colour. I wanted a 626 with 3 axis DRO, does your website specify how many axis the dro covers?. I also wanted power feeds to as many axis as possible, again does your website actually specify how many axis the power feed is fitted to? I could have done that but wanted specifics. Made sense at the time as it offered Myford capacity at a fraction of the cost. Over the years, the topslide feednut has worn out, so I emailed Warco regarding the availability of spares. Not just once, but about 5 times over the space of 4 years (at the time I had the use of other lathes, so not urgent). Not one single reply to any email, not even the expected 'sorry, but we don't carry spares for this machine any more'. Machine turned up exactly as specified, when expected and was positioned in the workshop in 10 mins by the truck driver.

This was 5 years ago, and no fault has been found so far, even so much as the tram was within limits straight out of the box. This machine has not been used lightly either, for about 6 months it was being used for 8 hours a day. There is not enough information there to form a reasonable basis for a purchasing decision. There is not enough information there to form a reasonable basis for a purchasing decision. Nice one Tony! This appeared to be made of recycled plastic with the consistency of a crumbly mature cheddar cheese. It was replaced under warranty no questions asked. I see from newer images that teh design of this has changed, so shouldn't be an issue for new purchasers. Never had any dealings with the C company. I damaged the switch box on my mill as well during a later house move. I replaced it with a cast alloy box. Use our magazine locator links to find your nearest stockist! The project was put on hold due to more pressing shop projects, so today I thought I may as well knock the dust off the machine and get back on and finish the project. The 626 mill. The build quality of my 626 mill is shocking and converting it to CNC is the kindest thing for it lol. A few examples of the quality of this mill. Lead screws Ways. I could go on, but I will spare you. So this is my attempt to polish a turd so to speek Cheers RobNow I have something I can work with. Plenty of clearance for the Y nut and Z pully. A tad of machining on the lathe, And a bit mill work. If you have any problems with the registration process or your account login, please contact us.

I was put off by the sheer size of the blooming things, but this one isn't. Is there something I don't know. Is there a better alternative. Is it a problem to CNC. Are they poorly made or what? Loads of backlash, wobbly as hell. Also not as small as you would think. I sold it and bought a Bridgeport sized machine which is lovely. However Double boost on YouTube has one and gets on fine with it.None of these Chinese machines are perfect (they wouldn't be at that price!) but the 626 just didn't seem as well finished. I added DRO (3-axis, using the knee as Z) plus power table feed in X. My main quibble is that the quill has a tiny amount of shake. It's easily good enough for drilling, and I lock it for milling anyway. I went R8 for the spindle which was the right choice for me. Most of my tooling was Morse 2 so I would have had to buy Morse 3 bits and pieces anyway and R8 is a much better system - undo the drawbar, tap the top of the drawbar, and the tool drops out. Morse tapers can need a bit of a wallop sometimes. However, you do need three hands to hold the drive pulley, support the chuck or whatever, plus use spanner on drawbar. It's not a big problem once you get the knack, but a spindle lock would be nice. Or powered drawbar. I could have done with a bit more clearance between spindle nose and table for some jobs, especially with long drills, but there's a limit to what I can fit in my workshop. Lack of headroom means that a second-hand Bridgeport would not have fitted, and for some reason my wife objected to cutting a clearance hole into the bedroom floor above the garage. The VMC has a downwards-pointing motor so just fits. If I had known then what I know now, I would have gone for a 3-phase version and added a separate VFD - belt-changing isn't that difficult but it's a nuisance. Warco now sell a version (at a higher price.) which has suitable motor and VFD fitted as standard.

I believe that there are some VMC CNC mods described but I haven't looked closely enough at mine to know if there's enough space under the table for a ballnut without extra clearance needed. I would also want to CNC drive the knee rather than quill (see above) and that needs a bit of work to arrange as well as fairly chunky drive system. Would I buy another. I know that I can get one from Chester's but it will be Monday before I can contact them. Thank you in anticipation. Have any members any experience of these machines. Untill recently i used a Axminster mill drill which i was not impressed with. John The whole web and you can only come up with some obscure website and a post 4 years old, and no follow on, most probably a good result in the end, written by someone who is ripping the machine apart and going over it with a microscope. With regards to this mill. Even though I ended up with a larger mill eventually, I did all my homework on buying a 626, and I can say that 99% of the stuff I came across, the 626 came out as a great machine, no matter where it was purchased from. Blogs He wasn't impressed for example with the supplier leaving cast iron dust (from fitting a DRO) all over the machine. The new price for these from any of three different suppliers is ?1500.00, plus shipping in most cases (not Warco though). For that price I'd expect it to be usable without having to replace parts.I'm looking for a new mill for my workshop. (Now, small rant mode engaged) RC Groups Obscure? Hardly. For normal milling operations I keep the quill locked up to maintain maximum rigidity. I only use the quill movement for drilling. It seems others don't though. No choice on some other machines I know but as I say mine has a knee. Is there really any good reason for extending the quill in milling operations. Seems like a dumb idea to me but perhaps I'm missing something. Enquiring minds need to know. I have a z axis DRO for the knee and another DRO for the quill so can easily read accurate depths of drilling. I have never thought about milling with the quill extended as I always assumed that this would lead to reduced rigidity and accentuate any tramming errors if present. Mike The drill press I have (Sears) does not have a X-Y moveable stage, and is not high precision, so it is out. Put new bearings and a movable stage on the drill press. Mosey I might add that the machine is as solid as a rock with virtually no vibration, certainly due in part to the lack of a quill. I never had any issues with shatter or being not accurate because of the quill being down feed. I use the mill most of the time for model engineering and I have no need to do very rough cuts. Cheers,Ralph I use the fine feed on the column for 'normal milling' with the quill locked, but for boring with a boring head or plunging an end mill I generally use the quill. I do wonder though why they actually designed the 626 with a fine feed on the quill as well as the drilling feature.

I do wonder though why they actually designed the 626 with a fine feed on the quill as well as the drilling feature. I guess that the Clausing mill, which is the grandfather of the 626 as well as the Myford VHM have this features. The same goes to the Bridgeport,a knee mill with fine feed and boring option for the quill. Cheers,Ralph Even though the Bridgeport has a powered quill, I found the slowest speed (1.5 thou per rev) didn't give as good a finish. I use the quill for drilling. Mostly by hand; occasionally with the powered downfeed. The nicest finishes and the most accurate parts are produced when there is the least amount of flexibility in the tooling. You've all modded this and that piece of equipment, all the way up to Bridgeport size kit to maximize rigidity. The knee, as Stan eludes to, is a formidable mass and lends very nicely to the rigidity constraints placed upon on it. My humble 2 cents Cletus I've found, when drilling to a specified depth, I get better control than with the quill handle. I think I will take it off and put it in the cupboard underneath the mill.
